Things Related To The Dangers Of Bhakra Dam

The rise in the Bhakra dam water level has been a great concern to the engineers and the people of North India of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. The melting of the ice has provided a great flood hazard in the areas of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. The matter regarding the dangers from the Bhakra dam have been raised by the members of All India Power Engineers with the union government and has led many questions to the Bharkra Beas Management Board’s policy, where water is being overconsumed. The board is failing to revive the two units of Bhakra in time and the board is being also blamed for the shortage of electricity as well as for the reduction in the water discharge.

Things Related To The Dangers Of Bhakra Dam

The chairman of All India Power Engineers Association, Padamjit Singh said that BBMB will take steps in generating more electricity from the dam and will try to slow the filling of the reservoir. The chances of spillage will increase if the two units (unit 2 and unit 5) at Bhakra are not revived.
A forecast conducted by the Indian Meteorological department which took on 26 April, reported that the BBMB should have responded by a substantial increase in the generation of electricity but the filling of the reservoir is done rapidly without much release of water and generation of electricity.

The rate at which the reservoir is being filled have given an estimation that the water level will find the height of the dam which is 1690 feet, by August 20 and will be cross the level by around 10 meters by August 31. Hence it becomes very to have dynamic flow from the reservoir.

Two important things, as a remedy, could be done. Either the reservoir should be filled up to a height of 1685 feet, so that no spillage is made or to maximize the release rate from the reservoir so that the spillage rate is minimized
