Patiala Medical College Wishes To Append 69 MD Seats

Government Medical College of Patiala has submitted an application to be allowed to increase the number of MDs (Doctor of Medicine) in the college from 120 to 189 to the Medical Council of India (MCI).

The college has already gotten go signal from the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) in this regard. They have also received a no objection certificate (NOC) from the Punjab Government.

Now the clearance is left from the MCI.

The college authorities also intend to increase the number of MBBS seats from 150 to 250 in September. For this also a proposal is to be sent.

A 20-member team from BFUHS has recently done inspection at the Government Medical College, Patiala, for checking the smooth functioning of various departments to see the exact requirement for the increase in MD and MBBS seats by the college administrative is liable or not.

The team also took full stock of the infrastructure development plans that the college had devised incase it gets the grant.

Though the central government has increased the seats to 3,595 seats in 2012 throughout India, the seats for the last 35 years are the same at the Government Medical College of Patiala.

In actual fact, the MCI had put a ban on Chintpurni Madical College, Pathankot, for conducting any counseling session for its 150 seats.

After the seats decreased, the college prepared a proposal highlighting the structural changes and space arrangement to to clarify its need to increase the MBBS seats from 150 to 250.

The land that is to be utilized for building the various labs, operating theaters, library and wards as per the requirement of the MCI have been marked.

The last date to submit the application is May 31.

Dr. K D Singh, principal of the Government Medical College, Patiala, is hopeful of adding the required 65 seats soon.
