Sukhbir Singh Badal, the deputy chief minister, claimed that state would be power surplus. The next day only an estimate given by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) showed that an overall power shortage of 19.7% has been noticed inPatiala during the time span of 2013-2014.A power deficit of 25.6 % has been noticed in the peak hours when the load is maximum.

In the annual report, has put the estimated power demand in Punjab is 50,850 million units (MU). But 40,819 MUof electricity is available in Patiala in the current year. The state had faced a shortage of 5.3% last year. But Haryana on the other side has excess power. In the previous year only it was noticed that the power shortage in Haryana was much more in comparison with Punjab.

While taking about the Patiala power surplus the honorable deputy CM has stated that the Patiala will be a huge power surplus in the year 2013.

The CEA has made the assessment on the basis of availability from various stations in operation and upcoming generating units in Patiala. The report anticipated commissioning of one unit each at upcoming Goindwal Sahib and Talwandi Sabo thermal plants in June 2013 and then first week January of the coming year.
As the Goindwal Sahib project has got delayed by more than 3 long months, the shortage of power facilities is likely to be increased immensely during the course of time. According to the reports such immense shortage will be extremely impactful upon the Patiala people.

During paddy season, power deficit in Patiala is estimated to be over 25% for the months of June, July and August and about 20% for September and October. The report has indicated an overall energy shortage of 6.7% and a peak shortage of 2.3% in the country in 2013-14.
