Gurdwara Shri Dukhniwaran Sahib

Gurdwara Shri Dukhniwaran sahib is one of the most prestigious Gurudwara located in Patiala City. It is said that Shri Guru Teg Bhadur ji, the ninth Guru of Sikhs visited this place during his sojoum at Saifabad (now Bahadurgarh) at the request of the villagers of Lehal. This village is now in Patiala city. The jhivar of Lehal, Bhag Ram requested Guru ji to visit his village and bless the people of his village so that they could get rid of serious and long time sickness. On Magh Sudi 5, 1728 Bikram, i.e. 24 January 1672 Guru ji visited Lehal and sat under the banyan tree, which was by the side of a pond. While his stay here, the villagers got rid of long time sickness. The site where Guru ji had sat is known as Dukh Niwaran, which means eradication of suffering. The villagers of Lehal donated land for the Gurdwara visited by Shri Guru Teg Bahadur. A strong belief about this Gurdwara Sahib is that anyone who prays in this Gurdwara is relieved from his sufferings. Guru ji blessed that any person suffering with any disease can be cured by taking bath in this holy place. Basant Panchami is a special day for taking bath in this place. The Gurudwara Construction was started in the year 1930 and was completed twelve years later in the year 1942. In 1930 funds were collected by a committee to commence the construction. After construction, it was under the administrative control of the Patiala State Government. Later it was transferred to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. The building of Gurdwara spreads over large area. The two storeys building in the center of Gurdwara is with domed pavilions on the top, it is on a raised base having there is an octagonal domed chamber at each corner on a raised base. Decorative domed pavilions are at the corners and in the middle on top of the walls is lotus. The interior is paved with slabs of marble. History of Dukhniwaran Sahib:
In 1913 Bhai Joginder Singh ji was walking with his friend by the side of canal away from the city. They wanted to stay there for evening prayers, Rehras. They saw a large tree of Banyan with cool shade. They sat under the tree in meditation for sometime. Bhai Joginder Singh ji concluded that this place must be related to some spiritual events of past. Village Lehal was near. He contacted three persons of eighty years from the village and requested them to tell them any special occurrences related to Banyan tree. The old persons told them that there is a pond nearby known as ‘Pond of Akali’s’ and this pond is blessed with special healing powers. On Panchami, the pilgrims of all faiths from different places come here for the fulfillment of their wishes. After hearing the importance of pond by the villagers Bhai Joginder Singh ji brought few other singhs from the village for a prayer by five singhs, i.e. Ardas. Later in 1927-28 the ‘Pattas’ were discovered by Magistrate S.Gurdit singh and Sant Arjan singh ji. This proved that this place is visited by Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib. Guru ji had rested under the Banyan tree for sometime on his way to Dehli. After that Sant ji remained engrossed in meditation under Banyan tree day and night for months with his bare body. The place acquired fame after the auspicious effect of his penance. S. Atma singh, the nephew of Bhai Joginder singh, produced the map of marvelous architecture for the building of Gurudwara Sahib. The building got fully constructed according to the designed map.

Still in 2009, a construction work is in progress and the top dome is getting gold platted. It is believed to be finished soon.
